Hitting a 1/4 pounder

It was a good start today.  Short court strokes were proper.  Missing a few but nothing to worry about.

We played doubles.  Heather, Kathy, Nicole and I.  My serves were good.  DFd once.  They all had pace and placement.   I knew the balls were new.  They sounded different today.  They felt heavy.  I had to catch one a couple of times and squeeze it.  It felt good.  But the hits were different too.  They stayed on the racket forever.  I watched them closely I could see them to the racket and the way they sat on the strings.  The ball compressed into a flat disc about 7/8 of an inch think.  The string held the ball and almost all shots were perfect.  Top spin that sucked it down and kicked it forward.  Just like I intended…  a couple hit the net.  I do not recall one that was out.

On my second service it all felt different.  The ball hung in the air.  I had seen that before.  Somehow it felt like I was able to stretch higher than I ever could.  Somehow my shoulder felt higher and my arm seemed to be as long as it could possibley be.  I have served of thousands of balls trying to reach and thinking I was there but once again I have surprised myself exceeding a boundary that I did not know was there.

Gotta repeat that feeling.
