A great hit with Dawn this morning.  People were taking pictures.  It was fun.

A good hit at QE Tennis Club.  Thanks for all the great partners that I worked with today.  I played four half hour sessions today.  I have only played three half hour sessions lately.

I have signed up for a tournament in one week.  Match play is less intensive than practise I hope they are all quick.

I worked very hard through the last two sessions today.  As usual pain is gone after the hit. 🙂

I am really looking forward to the mental challenge of match play.  I must maintain my focus.

Richard Meyer the tournament director for the August tournament called to let me know how surprised he was that I had entered the open in Oregon.  We chatted for a while.  It was a warm welcome.  It made me think about all the people I might see again at the tournament and how nice that will be.

It will be good to see people I have not seen for a few years.  I hope some of my american friends make it.  I hope to bring my best mental game with me.

Nice hit with Louis this evening.

Finding out today that I was possibly taking too much Tylenol and this was a possible reason for my Tinnitus.  This was a relief for my worries as my increased ear ringing may decrease.  45 Db in my right ear and 35 Db in the left.  I am looking forward to relief… I hope it is the issue.

Sick again this week.  Very tired after my last two hits.  Happy with my skill set thought.

It have been over two years since I have competed.  I feel my body is in slightly better shape.  My shoulders are still recovering and I cannot believe it is taking so long.  Physio, Acupuncture, Massage and Chiro.  Stretches and exercises have made it useful again.  I pray it is better in a while.  We are concentrating on my deltoid now.  I must try to recover every muscle in my body for an active healthy life… 30+ years to go.  Starting pain and anti inflammatory meds months ago has made my days bearable.

Looking forward to the competition… it makes me feel alive.

Working on different aspect of the game.  The focus has gone from how to make a shot to finding a groove.  A flexible comfortable game make up that is effective.  Using different shots.  AVOID that short slice… a very unreliable shot.  strategies are beginning to form.

Played Louis today.  The first set went 6-1.  During the second I tried to vary my style of play.  Trying to be more aggressive in order to develop control of points.  A few more errors than usual were made but it was a new thing.  The game was sun when this technique worked. 4-6

2- 4340 Big Lou

Whent head to head against Denise in a pro set.  Used the same strategy as when I played Louis.  I played Denise once before and I know she not only has a great stroke but she is fast on her feet.  I was a good competition.  I played at different level than when i played Louis.  My breathing was keyed in.  My head was in the right place.  I played to get a game in the beginning trying to find holes in her game.  I found a couple of spots that were consistently open.  I used the holes when I could.  I played well.

Must take up my pace on my shots.  Set up better.  Last time 0-10, this year 4-10.  Thanks Denise.

A tough day today.  Foot pain was incredible.  Did the bike ride.  Meditation and tennis.  By 11 am it was finished.   Trying to sit as much as possible but it is still reminding me let it rest.  After tennis I am usually without leg pain for about 1/2 an hour.  Today the pain was unreal on the top of my foot.  Tennis gave it no relief.

Played Daniel.  I did not get to the place in my mind that I did with Denise.  I did however find his hole and there was one big one.  But finding the opportunity to hit it there was not easy.  Even when the opportunity presented itself I forgot to use it.  No regrats on that.

Fuck Those Who Are Trying to Fuck Your Focus

It is a sport.  Some try to play the game off the court and others are just trying to honestly help.  But no matter what unless it is requested any unsolicited advice does not improve your game.  It is best to be nice to these people and then maybe… have a good laugh afterwards.

Since birth people have been telling me (and you) what to do.  Certain times for some things you do not need advice any more.  Sit up straight!!!

I had two people approach me about my game this week.  Well three.  But Mike E. does not count.  I have been blocking my good friend out for years selecting only valuable morsels that I did not know or have ignored  and must improve on.  Mike’s knowledge and experience are valuable assets to have on my side.  Love ya Mike E.

A stranger/acquaintance? came up to me on court to give me advice on my forehand.  I know his name and have played doubles against him a couple of times over the  years.  He said my shots were landing to close to the baseline.  My power was great, height over the net, great depth and direction great… (so what is the issue).  He said my shots should come down right after the net.  (That is not my goal)  I listened as he explained how to get under the ball.  I tried to hear something new.  I swung my racket a few times imitating his demonstration.  I thanked him greatly for the advice.  I asked him which grip he was using and we talked for a little longer before I returned my focus to the ball machine.

A Pseudo Acquaintance approached me as I left rehab.  He had the opinion that I should be joining the wheelchair division in the local tournaments.  I told him they were horribly organized events and I did not have want tp attend events at this quality level.  He then told me to put away my issues with a wheelchair coach.  I said I have tired but the coach is simply an asshole who continues to take shots at me when he can.  He said he was aware of this but that I had to stand up.  I said I already have.  It did not make a difference, the coach has no control over himself,  it is in his make up to be this way.  I was finished talking about this.  Mr Pseudo Acquaintance asked me a few times what I would do if it was two students in my class and this was happening.  Pseudo Acquaintance kept on saying it was my loss.  When I asked him why it was my loss he could not answer.  He would respond with “Your missing out.” I finally answered his badgering questions about my students with, “I would send the bully to the office telling him I want to meet with him, his parents, and the principal before he was allowed back to class.”  He then asked me what I would do if another teacher did this too me.  I told him what i would do.  Pseudo said I should do that to the coach.  I told him that I did but “he (coach) didn’t get it.”

In life people will always tell you what to do.  In sport people will do the same.  Always do your best to treat these people well.  They are behaving out of ignorance.

The man trying to change my forehand I will not use his advice but I will always respect his good intention.

Pseudo Acquaintance has been in my life for years.  I will very likely see him again.  His ignorance will fail.  The longer he talks the less he has to say.  Rather than supporting another athlete he has different objective.  A few years ago he asked me to play with him.  Before we played we talked about setting up regular times to play..  We met at Douglas Park and it was close to dusk.  We warmed up and agreed to play one set.  Near the end of the set I was complaining about vision issues with dusk and the shadows from the trees.  I took the set.  He did not want to leave.  He wanted to play a second set.  I said I could not.  He insisted.  I let him know that he would not get the best possible Gary because of the lack of sunlight.  The second set was much closer as he depended on lobs that my eyes lost in the trees.   I won the second set.  We agreed to meet again to play.  I texted him a couple of times to set up a play tme after that but he did not return.

Mike E. is my brother in arms.  Wrong or right I will always listen to what Mike has to say.  His honest intention is obvious.

Times of attack on ability are the best test and trainer for focus.  Reflections of the past may come to you play.  They can be positive or negative.  It used to be the negative ones that stuck with me the longest.  I think there is some simple reasoning as to why that is.  Focus on your ability by focusing on the ball.  If you are Serving or rallying make sure you are in the zone before you strike a ball.

Today bike ride went well.  My back cracked two time when I turned for a left shoulder check.  I crave the feeling my body has when I can use it all effectively when I cycle.

“Winning is overcoming obstacles to reach a goal, but the value in winning is only as great as the value of the goal reached. Reaching the goal itself may not be as valuable as the experience that can come in making a supreme effort to overcome the obstacles involved.” T. Gallwey

Tuesday is my day of improvement.  Over the last few months I have not been working due to parts of my body not working the way they should and general body pain.  Tuesday is main regular day I seek my professional help.  Today was Physio, Acupuncture, Massage, Chiro and Shock-wave.  After every Tuesday for the past month or so I have felt great improvements after this work has been done.  One area in my lower back has taken me out of work and other activities many times over the last 40+ years.  This area is one place that has been without any pain for the last few weeks…  The first time in years.  Although there are still a couple of areas in my back that are in constant pain.  I feel improvement in these areas too.  These two areas are annoying 24 hours a day,  There have been a couple of times in the last few months that these areas have been without pain for periods of hours.  I hope my painfulness can be greatly reduced through exercise and proper medical attention.

It feels good to do activities and be healthy.  They are going to get me in a swimming exercise program and both meditation and Yoga for pain.  My days are getting very full of rehab duties.

Put Down the Duckie

Dear Bob

Sasha and I were partners today in double.   We were down 0-3.  We communicated very well.  After 45 minutes were changed the match score to 5-3.  It was a good feeling.

We both thank you for your lessons this winter.

Our focus was good.
