Dirty bubble

DSC_0162

Good hit with good friends.

The facilities sucked.  UBC is one of my favorite places.  All of the staff are incredible and the buildings are great too.  It is almost always possible to get a court in the winter.

Dirty dirty dirty bubble.  The bubble is a separate building from the main tennis centre physically the building is not set up properly.  The nets that divide courts are not centered properly. For example on court four the net is in line with the outside post on one side of the court.  That means a wide serve is always an ace.  An opponent cannot get to it because of the net and only the lowest of players serves wide on that court.  So we must serve on the center or body.  The heating sytsem does heat the building well but the heaters themselves are not working consistently which means if you are behind the base line on one side of the building you will burn up similar to re-entry to your favorite planet.  Lighting is GREAT.  Courts are GREAT.

The access road between the main building and the bubble has no lighing and is a few hundred feet long with speed bumps and manhole covers.  You cannot see your hand in front of you once you have left the bubble.  There are garbage bins and other objects along the side of the road which are perfect for the current UBC rapist (dubbed the motor boat rapist) to hide behind.  I am not worried about being raped.  Maybe senselessly mugged but not raped.

In both buildings there are coffee stains at the benches or rest stations on all courts.  The clients do not seem to be aware that they should not bring coffee and food on the courts.  That is gross.  There is an excess of dust buildup in both buildings and it is visible.  But inside the bubble is a mess. In the entire building there was only one trash can visible.  It was in the center of the courts. Between courts two and three.  It was the size of a bin you would find under an office desk.  There was no room in it.  It was over flowing and people were not using it anymore.  There was trash everywhere in the building   Coffee cups, candy and energy bar wrappers, ball cans, lids.  I have not played in the bubble for a long time and I would guess it had not had a major cleaning in over a year.  The ball fluff was everywhere.  When I would coast to make a shot it would block my casters slowing and sometimes redirecting me.

I spoke to the gentlemen who were playing on the court after us about how the conditions are and they agreed commenting that it is the most expensive facility in the city and the only one that charged for parking.   Bringing the hourly fee for the four of them to almost $50 per hour.  They also told me that is was because the UBC athletics had more maintenance to do with the large new buildings that were added when the Olympics were here.

Please clean the floor entirely every week or two. Add more garbage cans and empty them once a day.  Get some lights outside before someone trips and hurts themselves.

UBC is one of my favorite places.  All of the staff are incredible the buildings are great too.

Thank you UBC!

Thanks for the hit Mike Shane and Dave.
